A Rebuttal to George Michael from a Veteran of the Global Wars on Terror
I don’t believe in God but I do have faith
I met God
on a mountaintop in old Bactria
before we finished our cigarettes
and went our separate ways
into the snow-glittered night
God said “Sorry”
“I kinda hoped it’d go a little different”
us too
Big Guy
us too
God is shorter than I anticipated
I could look them right in the eye
I can’t remember if they were
blue
or brown
or black
or there at all
I ran into them a few more times over there
at chow
at the morgue
at a talent show
in mirrors
and in blood
they got killed downrange before Thanksgiving
I was home by Saint Pat’s
and on the VA’s finest diet–heroin©⛧℗™
by the 4th of July
war is Hell
and God checks in on Hell from time to time
to mourn their mistakes
and comfort or confound the lost
God
Cute kid
weird dude
